This past weekend, some of us had the opportunity to head up to Boston (Somerville to be precise) to watch the North East Regional Barista Competition.

For those of you curious as to what this entailed, there is a great video piece by Abbey Niezgoda that you can watch here (which includes a small interview with Jordan).

“The newcomers may be getting all the attention, but small New York coffee producers like Cafe Grumpy are sanguine about the out-of-towners. Grumpy opened its first cafe in Greenpoint in November 2005 and has since opened two more, in Chelsea and Park Slope, and also started a roasting facility in the back of the Greenpoint cafe last September.”

It’s not unusual for a lifetime coffee drinker, when presented with single-origin brews at a cupping, to say that each smells and tastes like, well, coffee. “You’ve got to keep practicing,” said Ed Kaufmann, a barista who often leads weekly cuppings for Café Grumpy in Chelsea.
