Prize-Winning Coffees from Latin America
“On the other hand, the competition model is precious and essential. One could argue that it is responsible for creating many of the relationships and expectations that led to the creation of direct trade programs in the first place. It discovers coffees from small producers that would never find recognition and exposure otherwise, and assures these producers attention from buyers for years after their initial success. The anonymity of the jury process may perhaps diminish the injection of individual taste and personality into the coffee selection process, but it also creates an invaluable level playing field for producers and helps build a global community around quality and distinction…”
…”Implied controversy aside, we did turn up some impressive competition-winning coffees, eight of which are reviewed here, among them one clearly exceptional sample, the 94-rated Café Grumpy Honduras Fernandez Farm.”

Honduras Cup of Excellence Lot #4 – Fernández Farm
Red currant aroma. Floral brightness. Sweet notes of aged bourbon & molasses.
The following review is from Kenneth Davids, Coffee Review, December 2010:
“Overall Rating: 94 points
Roast (Agtron): Medium-Light (54/73)
Notes: Produced by Cesar Agusto Fernández on his namesake farm and a prize winner in the 2010 Honduras Cup of Excellence (www.cupofexcellence.org) competition, where as a green (unroasted) coffee it placed fourth out of hundreds of entries, attracting a score of 89.70 from an international jury.
Blind Assessment: Symphonically fruit-toned and shimmeringly bright. An “underlying crushed grape sweetness” (co-cupper Wendy De Jong, 94) supported an array of lemon and berry suggestions. Ken (94) found deepening hints of fresh-cut fir and dark chocolate as well. Forward but accessible acidity, silky mouthfeel, sweetly tart finish.
Who should drink it: Refreshing, sweetly and impressively complex breakfast cup.”

Finca Puerta Verde
Berry aroma. Notes of honeysuckle and molasses.
From the Antigua region, this fully washed Bourbon and Caturra blend is carefully cultivated at 1540 meters above sea level. This four-generation coffee growing family has been working Puetra Verde since the beginning of the 19th century. “Blind Assessment: Flowers, butter and nut in the aroma with a fleeting hint of a buttery coconut-like fruit. In the cup penetrating orange-toned acidity, lightly syrupy mouthfeel and complex layers of flavors: flowers, orange, lemon, nut and fir-like aromatic wood. Dry in the finish with citrus and fir tones lingering distinctly in the long.”

“Blind Assessment: Lush, berry-sweet aroma with notes of honey, aromatic wood, and night flowers. In the cup, lightly syrupy mouthfeel, bright acidity, with an orangy sweet citrus character complicated by continued suggestions of berry and aromatic wood. A very mild astringency distracts from an otherwise sweet, fruit-toned finish.”
