Amid Rising Demand, Price Of Coffee Beans Soars

“There was a time when coffee was a much simpler affair, but not anymore. Now you can order coffee from specific countries.
Cafe Grumpy, a specialty coffee bar in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, serves high-quality coffee at prices ranging from $2 to $8.
“I don’t think they are afraid to spend their money if they know they are getting something worthwhile or good or sustainable,” said co-owner Caroline Bell.”

Coffee wars: New cult-hit java joints are brewing a big city rivalry

“The newcomers may be getting all the attention, but small New York coffee producers like Cafe Grumpy are sanguine about the out-of-towners. Grumpy opened its first cafe in Greenpoint in November 2005 and has since opened two more, in Chelsea and Park Slope, and also started a roasting facility in the back of the Greenpoint cafe last September.”
